In case you haven’t been outside lately, you can take it from us, it’s cold out there. Many of us southerners aren’t used to freezing conditions. So what can you do to prepare yourself for these harsh conditions? You’ve probably cranked up the heater and bundled up under more than a few layers of blankets. But there’s something else you should keep an eye on as the temperatures drop lower and lower… your car. Freezing weather can be just as harsh, if not more so, on your vehicle as it is on you.

Luckily, there are a few simple things you can do to help make sure your car makes out of the season in one piece. So, we listed out the most important ones for you to follow and refer back to as needed.

Your Gas Tank
You might not realize it, but keeping your gas tank full throughout the winter is actually very important. Why? A mostly empty gas tank may accumulate water which will freeze easily if the temperature gets low enough. You also need more gas to keep the engine running longer, which you’ll want to do to get your heater warmed up.

Tire Pressure
Cold weather can do weird things to your tire pressure. Mainly, cold air outside your tire will lower the pressure inside your tire. It’s science, you can look it up if you don’t believe us. So during the winter, definitely keep a closer eye on your psi and make sure you’re not going too far under.

Engine Coolant
Engine coolant (also referred to as anti-freeze) will go a long way in keeping your engine flowing through freezing conditions. You can check the coolant level in your car yourself, and can check for any leaks or cracks that could have appeared. For most cars, a 50/50 mix of water and coolant in radiators, which will result in a lower freezing point.

You don’t realize how important your defroster is until you desperately need it. And there’s no worse feeling than turning on the defroster and it not working. So, before you get too far in the throes of winter, test out your defroster and make sure everything is working fine. If not, set an appointment with a trustworthy service department (we know a good one!) and get it fixed in time.
